Arethra Franklin Hospitalized

Last month you may have heard “Queen of Soul” Arethra Franklin was hospitalized with a mystery condition. The reason behind her admission was most likely due to an allergic reaction to antibiotics resulting in a dangerously low platelet count.

The reaction triggered a rash-like skin outbreak that her Doctor described as "superficial capillary bleeding" but he said it was not related to Franklin's hypertension, a condition that the singer is well known to suffer from. Franklin was released in time to celebrate her 62nd birthday with friends and family in her Detroit-area home.

The story illustrates the importance of keeping a record of all the medications you ever take so that in the future doctors can know what is safe for you. Medication records are one of the great features of MyNetRecord.

Check Your Skin

Skin cancers can be deadly so detecting them early is vital. A yearly skin examination by a doctor is recommended however you should also perform self-examination once a month. Fairer skinned people have a much higher risk of skin cancer, but no one should avoid checking themselves thoroughly.

The three main types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The key feature to look out for is a new growth or any skin change, hence the need to do checkups regularly.

Here are a few pointers for a self examination. It’s a lot easier (and more fun) if you get a partner to help you do it. What you'll need: a bright light; a full-length mirror; a hand mirror; two chairs or stools; a blow-dryer.

Examine head and face, using one or both mirrors. Use blow-dryer to inspect scalp. Check hands, including nails. In full-length mirror, examine elbows, arms, underarms. Focus on neck, chest, and torso. Women: Check under breasts. With back to the mirror, use hand mirror to inspect back of neck, shoulders, upper arms, back, buttocks, legs.
Sitting down, check legs and feet, including soles, heels, and nails. Use hand mirror to examine genitals.

Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is especially hard to stop once it has spread (metastasized) to other parts of the body. But it can be readily treated in its earliest stages.

Most people have a number of brownish spots on their skin - freckles, birthmarks, moles. Almost all such spots are normal, but some may be skin cancers. Key warning signs of melanoma are irregularities in shape, edges, color, and size.
